Two-Part DIY Topical Pain Relief: Magnesium Spray + Oil-Based Salve

Great for muscle/joint pain, cramps, or soreness—stable, no mold risk, and super simple!

While working on the formulas for topical pain relief I wanted something that was shelf stable without preservatives and emulsifiers. This becomes difficult when trying to combine magnesium chloride because it doesn’t dissolve in oils well. The best solution, to keep things simple and shelf stable was to create 2 recipes and apply one on top of the other!

Part 1: Magnesium Oil Spray

Ingredients:

  • How to make: Warm water gently, stir in flakes until dissolved. Cool and pour into a clean spray bottle.
  • Shelf life: 6–12 months (highly stable brine).
  • Use: Shake, spray 4–6 times on area, rub in. Let absorb 30–60 seconds. (Tingle is normal—means it’s working!)

I apply the salve while still wet. That makes the oils easier to spread thinly and evenly.

Part 2: Oil-Based CS Salve (No Water, No Spoilage)

  • Ingredients (makes ~4 oz):
    • 2 Tbsp colloidal silver (10–20 ppm)
    • 3 Tbsp coconut oil or shea butter (base)
    • 1 Tbsp jojoba oil (or rosehip/evening primrose for extra benefits)
    • 1–2 tsp MSM powder (anti-inflammatory sulfur)
    • 10–20% DMSO (pharmaceutical-grade – start low)
    • Optional: 100–200 mg HA powder (for hydration)

Instructions:

  • Gently warm coconut oil/shear butter + jojoba oil until liquid.
  • Stir in MSM and HA (if using) until dissolved. (some dissolve in a small amount of water first (dissolves easier in water, which evaporates when stirring.)
  • Remove from heat, cool slightly, then stir in CS and DMSO.
  • Stir in essential oils.
  • Pour into glass jar. Let cool.
  • Layering: Apply magnesium spray first (absorbs fast for muscle relaxation). While skin is still damp, rub in salve—easier spread, locks in benefits, no greasiness.Advantages of Layering:
    • Magnesium absorbs quickly for relaxation.
    • Oil salve seals it in, adds anti-inflammatory penetration.
    • Separate = stable long-term, flexible use (spray alone for quick relief, salve alone for soothing).

Shelf life: 6–12 months (cool, dark place).

Why Oil + Water Don’t Mix, But CS + Oil Works

Oil and water don’t mix because:

  • Water is polar (has positive/negative ends, like a tiny magnet).
  • Oils are non-polar (no charge).
  • Polar and non-polar molecules repel each other → separation.

CS is mostly water-based (silver nanoparticles suspended in distilled water), so how does it mix with oil?

  • When you add CS to warm oil, the water evaporates or gets dispersed as tiny droplets during mixing.
  • The silver nanoparticles (very small, ~10–50 nm) disperse throughout the oil and stay suspended due to Brownian motion and the oil’s viscosity.
  • Result: The silver particles remain active in the oil base, and the mixture stays stable (no separation).

This is why CS oil salves work—they’re not a true emulsion (no water left), just nanoparticles dispersed in oil. No emulsifier needed.

Here are two studies confirming colloidal silver nanoparticles remain stable in oil-based formulations (water evaporates during mixing, no spoilage risk):

HA is optional for added moisture (can be dissolved in a small amount of water first, evaporates in warm oil.
EOs are customizable.

Essential Oils for Pain

Frankincense is great (anti-inflammatory, calming), but for pain relief, here are stronger options:

  • Helichrysum – Known as “the trauma oil,” excellent for pain, inflammation, bruising, and tissue repair.
  • Myrrh – Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, supports healing of wounds and pain.
  • Peppermint – Cooling, numbing effect for muscle/joint pain.
  • Wintergreen – Strong analgesic (contains methyl salicylate, similar to aspirin).
  • Lavender – Calming, reduces pain perception.

Optional EOs: Pick 1–3 from the above (5–10 drops total per 4 oz batch). Frankincense, helichrysum, and myrrh are the top pain trio.

  • MSM provides sulfur for tissue repair and anti-inflammation.
  • DMSO is the penetration enhancer that carries MSM (and any other actives) deeper into tissues.
