DIY Eyedrops: MSM with Hyaluronic Acid

For Dry Eyes and More

I use Happy Body MSM crystals (my top recommendation for purity) and add hyaluronic acid (HA) for that premium tear-like moisture. The HA addition is a game-changer for dryness and comfort!

Why this recipe?

  • MSM softens tissues, reduces inflammation, and helps with floaters/irritation.
  • HA locks in hydration (like natural tears).
  • A touch of salt makes it isotonic (matches your eye’s natural salinity) so it stings less—even with colloidal silver (CS).
  • Using your home-made CS (10-20 ppm) as the base adds mild natural antimicrobial support, but these drops are still water-based and best used fresh. No need for preservatives like potassium sorbate are needed for short-term use.
Shelf Life: 1-2 weeks out of fridge, 4-8 weeks in the fridge in a sterile glass bottle, no finger contamination. Discard if it smells off, gets cloudy or shows growth. Make small batches to use up quickly. CS reduces bacterial growth but doesn’t fully prevent mold or yeast (especially in a nutrient-rich solution with MSM and HA).
  • See below for OPTIONAL DMSO addition.

Instructions:

  1. Heat ½ cup (120 ml) clear electro-colloidal silver (10-20ppm range) just until warm for easier dissolving. Use stove or kettle (no microwave). Pour into a clean glass jar.)
→ Use 100% CS for:  max preservation, or 50/50 with distilled water if you prefer milder.
  2. While still warm, stir in MSM (½–1 tsp) until fully dissolved (crystals take a bit longer—be patient!).
→ Crystals are purest, Happy Body has pure powder, others have anti caking agents, even OptiMSM brand—stir well in warm water to dissolve.
See below for MSM Strength Guide ⬇
  3. Add the hyaluronic acid powder (open capsule and sprinkle in); stir gently until clear and slightly gel-like.
→ Start with ½ capsule for lighter feel; use full cap for thicker, longer-lasting lubrication.
See below for HA Strength Guide ⬇
  4. Optional: Stir in a tiny pinch (1/32 to 1/16 tsp) of non-iodized sea salt until dissolved. (I use pink Himalayan).
→ Makes drops isotonic (matches your eye’s natural salinity) so they sting less (plain CS can sting for some folks).
Start with the smallest amount possible. If using pure CS as the base, you may not need any salt at all.
  5. Filter through an organic coffee filter if any bits remain.
  6. Pour into a sterilized glass dropper bottle (boil or spray with CS to clean). Refrigerate and shake before use.
**For DMSO eye-drops: replace 10-20% of the base liquid (some drops go up to 40% DMSO increase at your own risk and discretion) with DMSO but don’t add DMSO until cooled.

DMSO works well with this DIY because:

  • The base is pure (distilled water/CS/saline + MSM + HA + tiny salt).
  • No organic matter (like herbs, teas, or proteins) that could react or spoil.
  • No complex additives that could bind with DMSO or silver particles.

DMSO mixes cleanly with this simple, water-based formula without causing instability, precipitation, or spoilage. It enhances penetration and anti-inflammatory effects while the MSM and HA do their soothing/hydrating work. But add it at the end (after dissolving MSM/HA/salt in warm water/CS) and start low (5–10% DMSO) to test for sting.

MSM Strength Guide

MSM Strength Options for ½ Cup (120 ml) Batch

  • Gentle (2–4%): Daily use, minimal sting.
    • Powder: ½ teaspoon (~2–2.5 g)
    • Crystals: ¾ teaspoon (~2–2.5 g)
  • Medium (5%): Balanced strength.
    • Powder: 1 heaping teaspoon (~4–5 g)
    • Crystals: 1¼ teaspoons (~4–5 g)
  • Strong (8–10%): For floaters/irritation; may sting initially—start low.
    • Powder: 1½ to 2 teaspoons (~6–10 g)
    • Crystals: 2 to 2½ teaspoons (~6–10 g)
  • Stronger (up to 15%) some brands such as the Happy Body drops I recommend for those that don’t want to make their own are 15%. Link: USA: https://happybodystore.com/?aff=14

  • This strength isn’t always recommended for daily use. Increase for your own needs and at your own risk.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Strength Guide

½–1 capsule (100–200 mg) is conservative for a light, non-blurry feel.

For ½ cup (120 ml), you could safely go up to 2–3 capsules (400–600 mg) for a higher 0.3–0.5% concentration—this is common in premium commercial HA drops (e.g., Hylo-Gel at 0.4%). It creates thicker, longer-lasting lubrication without excessive viscosity or blur for most people.

  • Highest I’d recommend: 3 capsules (600 mg) max per ½ cup—test for comfort, as very high HA can feel “gooey” or leave a film. Start at 1–2 and add if needed.

How to Use:

  • 1–2 drops per eye as needed.
  • Start low on MSM if new to it—eyes may feel a mild tingle at first but adapt quickly.
  • Patch test in one eye and wait 10–15 minutes.

Happy Body MSM is the gold standard for purity, and Lake Avenue OptiMSM is also very pure.  Cheaper options work for some, but stick to human-grade for eyes.

MSM Purity & Grades: Is “Higher Grade” Important?

Yes, it’s important to prioritize higher purity MSM for human use (especially in eye drops)—Happy Body is my top choice—it’s consistently praised for being 100% pure, additive-free MSM crystals (no anti-caking agents, fillers, or contaminants). Here’s the breakdown based on reliable sources:

  • Pharmaceutical/Human Grade: Highest quality (≥99% pure, often distilled multiple times for minimal impurities like heavy metals). Safe and ideal for ingestion/topical/ocular use. Brands like Happy Body, Lake Avenue, or other certified pure ones fall here.
  • Food Grade: Lower purity (still safe for consumption but may have more impurities). Not ideal for eyes.
  • Animal/Feed Grade: Cheapest, but often less pure—can contain heavy metals, contaminants, or residues from manufacturing. Sources note animal-grade MSM varies widely in quality and isn’t held to the same standards as human-grade. Many experts advise against it for human use, especially sensitive applications like eyes (risk of irritation or unknown impurities).

Bottom line: Stick with pharmaceutical-grade or certified pure MSM (like Happy Body) for peace of mind—especially in DIY eye drops where purity matters most. Cheaper options work for some (if tested clean), but why risk it when pure is affordable and available?

Colloidal silver is preferred over regular saline. Your home-brewed 10-20 ppm CS is a natural antimicrobial powerhouse. It can replace preservatives like sorbate, reducing bacterial risk and extending usability (potentially weeks longer than plain water-based mixes). Since CS is antibacterial/antifungal, it handles “stability” naturally!

Hyaluronic Acid Benefits (Not Just For Eyes)

HA is a total superstar—your body makes it naturally (high amounts in eyes, joints, skin), but levels drop with age/stress. It acts like a “moisture magnet,” holding up to 1,000x its weight in water. Studies (including clinical trials) show real perks for hydration and lubrication without pharma side effects.

For Eyes (Topical in Drops or Oral Support)

  • Deep hydration & dry eye relief: Binds water to keep the ocular surface moist longer than plain drops. Reduces irritation, grittiness, and redness—meta-analyses confirm it outperforms basic artificial tears for symptoms and tear stability.
  • Protects & heals cornea: Anti-inflammatory/antioxidant effects soothe damage from dryness, screens, or environment. Promotes epithelial wound healing (great for minor scratches/irritation).
  • Longer comfort: Viscoelastic (spreads easily on blink, stays put). Many OTC dry eye drops use 0.1–0.4% HA for this reason.
  • Oral bonus: Some pilot studies show 120–240 mg/day supplements improve dry eye signs by boosting systemic moisture (though topical is faster for eyes).

For Joints & Bones

  • Natural lubricant/cushion: HA is a major component of synovial fluid—acts like oil in joints, reducing friction so bones glide smoothly. Prevents grinding/pain in osteoarthritis.
  • Reduces inflammation & pain: Oral doses (80–200 mg/day for 2+ months) significantly ease knee/hip pain, stiffness, and improve mobility—especially ages 40–70. Injections go direct, but supplements build it up naturally.
  • Supports cartilage health: Helps retain water in joint tissues, preserving elasticity and shock absorption. May slow degeneration and aid repair.
  • Overall mobility boost: Studies link it to better quality of life for arthritis folks—less reliance on pain meds.

General dose for oral benefits: 120–240 mg/day (1–2 capsules) for 1–3 months to notice skin/joint/eye improvements. Safe long-term; side effects rare (mild gut upset at most).

    1. Are intra-ocular implants what you get with cataract surgery? If so yes.
Many people say no to DMSO as it could potentially damage the lenses, but there isn’t any evidence that it would, but because of that old animal study going viral most people avoid DMSO in the eyes but rub it around the eyes on the outside, still penetrates.
